A Saucy Album Title Isn’t Beneath Paul McCartney

Just when we were finally getting used to the fact that there’s going to be a James Bond movie called “Skyfall,” Paul McCartney has announced the title of his album of pop standards. And that title, he announced on Monday, is “Kisses on the Bottom.” We’ll give you a moment to contemplate that. Ready to continue? O.K.
Mr. McCartney, who is not a Jewish grandparent but is an admirer of Fats Waller, explained on his Web site that the album title was a reference to Waller’s 1930s hit “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” and not to any other “anatomical interpretation” suggested by “those who have historically subjected his every move to microscopic scrutiny.”
As noted by Mr. McCartney’s site, the lyrics of that song (which will also be the album’s lead track) run:

“I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you. I’m gonna write words, oh, so sweet, they’re gonna knock me off of my feet. A lot of kisses on the bottom, I’ll be glad I got ‘em.”

The album’s other tracks will include “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” and “My Very Good Friend, the Milkman,” and it is planned for release in February. In the meantime, we await Mr. McCartney’s explanation that “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road” is really a song about highway construction.

It's safe to say that 40 years into his solo career, you know what to expect with Ringo Starr: cheerful, upbeat songs about peace ("Anthem") and wistful nostalgia ("In Liverpool") that sound a bit like the Beatles' later output, albeit with their genius watered down to homeopathic levels. Bolstered by previous big-name collaborators Van Dyke Parks, Dave Stewart and Joe Walsh, his 17th album doesn't deviate wildly from the blueprint. It's all amiable enough stuff, if somewhat inconsequential, with the only real misstep a clumsy version of Buddy Holly's "Think it Over" that never recovers from a spectacularly ill-conceived intro.

There was a Beatle in the audience for James McCartney's show at the Viper Room in Hollywood Friday night, but it wasn't his dad Paul McCartney.

Chris Carter, host of "Chris Carter's 'Breakfast With the Beatles" on SiriusXM and KLOS-FM, tells us Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, his brother-in-law Joe Walsh, Ringo's wife Barbara Bach and Joe's wife, Marjorie Bach, Barbara's sister, all were at the younger McCartney's show at Hollywood's Viper Room. (You can see a clip of the show at left.)

"They seem to enjoy James," Carter told us.

While in Los Angeles, McCartney appeared on local station KTTV's "Good Day LA".

Ringo, who's about to release a new album "Ringo 2012," will be a guest on "Breakfast With the Beatles" on KLOS-FM Sunday between 11 a.m. and noon PT (2-3 p.m. ET) during an hour of what Carter calls "Ringo Starrtime." Those outside of Los Angeles can hear the show online at www.955klos.com.

Ringo will also be at the Troubadour Monday afternoon playing with Joe Walsh for the Sirius/XM Town Hall meeting where he'll also be interviewed by actor Russell Brand and some SiriusXM listeners.

Meanwhile, James McCartney will be in New York Monday night. He'll be making his U.S. TV debut that night on "Late Show With David Letterman" on CBS.

Per plaatje stapelt de geschiedenis van Paul, John, Ringo en George zich op tot alles wat er valt te weten over The Beatles. De zwart-wit-tekeningen zijn daarbij schitterend. Leuk is ook dat Bourhis het verhaal als fan vertelt, en niet schuwt een slecht album ook als zodanig te benoemen. Gewoon heel mooi gedaan, deze biografie waar je zeker enkele avonden mee zoet bent.

Sir Paul McCartney is uncomfortable but 'thankful' for his icon status.
The former Beatle has enjoyed a career in the music industry spanning over five decades and is as popular as ever.
But in an interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau, the 69-year-old revealed that he is just a simple man from England and doesn't see himself as others do.
'That feels strange. You know, deep inside I'm still the boy from Liverpool,' he said of being called an icon.
'But if people value me this way I can't just say, 'British icon? No thanks! I don't want to be an icon!' Even if that's true. I think about it this way: it's their way of telling me that I did good. So I have to accept it and be thankful.'
And 55 years after meeting his legendary partner John Lennon and starting his musical career, Paul still gets excited about being on stage.
'What should I say? It doesn't stop being fun for me!' he revealed. 'Last year in my tour in South America the people were absolutely fascinated - that was the best thing I ever saw! When I go on stage and am welcomed that happily it's really hard for me to just stop.'
Paul has no intention of giving up performing any time soon.
'I'll keep on going as long as people want to see me. I always end every concert with the sentence: 'See you next time,' and I mean it,' he confirmed.

Al vijftig jaar duurt de Beatlemania van de jaren zestig. John Lennon werd vermoord in 1980, 2001, gitaar virtuoos George Harrison stierf aan kanker. Dus meneer naast drummer Ringo Starr Paul van de Letztverbliebene is, opereert de one "alle Starr Band". Op 3 februari brengt McCartney het album "KIssen on a Bottom", een verzameling van liedjes uit de jaren 1930 en 1940 door Harold Arlen, Frank Loesser en Billy Hill, bij de originele composities "My Valentine" en "Alleen Our Hearts".

Komt op het podium en het publiek is schreeuwen van te voren, dan isdat ik wil , spelen, het voelt zo goed.. Het is totale geluk als een een grote drug..als mensen willen dat ik stop moeten ze weg slepen van het podium.Maar dan ga ik uit protest schreeuwen.Aan de andere kant ben ik ook verbaast dat ik nog stted kan optreden. Veel van mijn collega's dienden om te zetten hun liedjes in een lagere toets, zoals ze oude waren. . Ik weet niet waarom, en ik zal zelfs niet overwegen. Ik ben nog steeds een onschuldige vreugde op verschijnen. Ook ik had nooit iets anders kunt doen. Maximaal dat ik docenten Engels zou zijn geworden. Omdat ik zou zeker goed zijn geweest. Maar ik had het geluk dat ik kwam met de Beatles. En dat was meer spannend.

McCartney:Er zijn vandaag veel jonge bands die kunnen spelen. Maar de Beatles waren met name. Ik kan zeggen dat nu, omdat we ja hebben gehoord. De timing is veranderd, kunnen wij alles voor de eerste keer. De jongens zijn vandaag veel moeilijker. Is het nauwelijks mogelijk om iets te doen zoals de Beatles nogmaals: te vinden die worden gecoördineerd als we nog eens vier mensen. Ieder van ons had om zijn eigen carrière. John Lennon en de quarrymen, die had gewerkt goed omdat John zo cool was. Maar ook George, Ringo en ik maakte het. Wat is er vervolgens gebeurd met ons vier was magisch. Coldplay, de foo fighters zijn goed, en ik wens de jongens geluk. Maar niemand zal ooit goed zijn als de Beatlles.

Nieuws:Waarom zingen jij liedjes uit de jaren 30 en 40 nu?
McCartney:Ik ben opgegroeid met deze nummers. Haar stijl heeft fascineerde me sinds de kindertijd. Mijn vader heeft nummers gespeeldt op zijn piano.. Ik was op het tapijt en gehoord. Zoals ik schreef dan zelfs liedjes, realiseerde ik me dat elk een van de oude nummers een kleine, elegante parel, de mooiste ambachtelijke is. Ik was gefascineerd door Cole Porter en Gershwin. Toen kwam rock 'n' roll, en ik ontmoette John. Toen we onze eerste nummers schreef, gingen we in de richting van de rock 'n' roll. Maar deze muziek uit de ARA Fats Waller was ons uitgangspunt. Onze nummers werden gekenmerkt door hen. Als een de songs van de Beatles analyseert, erkent men dat precies. Denk aan "Hier, daar en overal". We dachten dat het zou leuk, als we iets als kleine lozingen voor onze nummers schrijven. We hebben een juiste structuur gebouwd. En in het midden moet iets dat andere akkoorden gaat. Dat was er nooit in de rock 'n' roll. En het heeft onze muziek zo speciaal.

Nieuws:Waarom was u alleen deze muziek nu opgenomen?
McCartney:Ik wilde het lange, maar altijd anderen eerder kwam bij me op. Rod Stewart heeft gestolen van de meest bekende nummers zoals "The Way You Look Tonight". We hebben gezocht naar nummers die niet iedereen weet. Door Harold Arlen van "it's only A Paper Moon", ik heb ooit een instrumentale versie met John en de Quarrymen gedaan.. Ik had helemaal vergeten dat. Nu, heb ik opnieuw samengewerkt met grote muzikanten. Het was bijna zoals ze met de Beatles deden. Er zijn een heleboel energie om te spelen met de wil van Stevie Wonder en Eric Clapton. En de titel van "hoe meer ik kan niet wens u" heeft betrekking op mezelf. Dat is erg emotioneel, aangezien een vader tot zijn dochtertje spreekt, en ik slechts één dochter van acht jaar opvoeden. En ook ik heb kleinkinderen.

McCartney:Het nieuwe lied "My Valentine" ingelijfd bijna vanzelf. Dit is net als in alle goede nummers. Mijn vrouw Nancy en ik waren op vakantie in Marokko. Het regende. Ik zei, dit zal ruïneren onze vakantie. Maar het deed er niet toe aan haar. Een middag, ging ik in de zaal en ging zitten aan de piano. Er was niemand behalve de obers die net opgehelderd. Ik speelde een paar noten, en toen kwam dit lied. Nancy was de inspiratie.

McCartney:Hij moet een technische structuur en ontwikkeld als een goed stuk van het meubilair. Hij moet iets zeggen en hebben een goede melodie. Mensen moeten aanvaarden tenzij zij denken over wat ze op alle zingen.

McCartney:We geschoten er, de film "Help". We hadden veel plezier. Niemand van ons kan Ski's. We hebben een scène waar Ringo verkeerd naar beneden de helling rijden. En ik zal nooit vergeten de sleigh ride met het paard.

Nieuws:What's next? werkt opnieuw aan nieuwe klassieke muziek ? Nog ontbreekt een opera na een ballet en een oratorium.
McCartney:Opera? Dat was de muziek die mijn vader altijd uitgeschakeldde toen het op als het op de radio te horen was.. Mijn "Liverpool oratorium" was al bijna zo iets als een opera. Ik wilde het componeren maar zodat het zat tedichet bij dit genre. (Onderbreekt, zoals een operazanger zingt). Maar waarom niet echt? Nu, wanneer ik het in overweging zal nemen zal ik een opera schrijven, dat wordt een uitdaging voor mij.

The Lunar New Year is celebrated in China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Tibet, as well is in countries such as Singapore that have large Chinese populations. Christopher Livaccari of the Asia Society explains to Yahoo! Shine that it used to be celebrated widely in Japan, but now most Japanese people consider January 1st to be the main New Year's holiday.

Year of the Dragon

This year's Lunar New Year begins on January 23, which is the first day of the first new moon of the year. It ends 15 days later on the full moon. The Chinese calendar is divided into 12 cycles each represented by a special animal. According to Chinese Astrology, this year is the year of the Dragon, the only mythical animal in the zodiac. People born in the year of the Dragon are said to be energetic, charismatic, and natural born leaders. Some famous "Dragons" include Joan of Arc, Vladimir Putin, and John Lennon.

Lunar New Year Traditions

Celebrations of the coming year commence on the eve of the first new moon with a feast and fireworks. Families clean their homes to symbolize a fresh start and buy flowers and plants, which represent rebirth. Often, gifts of new money or money in red and gold envelopes are exchanged to bring good fortune. Livaccari told Shine, "I think some people tend to think of these holidays and celebrations as something very exotic, but most people in contemporary East Asia see this time as an opportunity to take a break from school and work and reconnect with family, much like we would on Thanksgiving or Christmas."

Lucky foods include dumplings and other stuffed delicacies which symbolize little packages of good fortune, oranges which in Chinese sound like the word for "auspicious," and apples which sound like "peace." Fireworks are detonated to ward off evil spirits. Boisterous dragon dances are also performed to scare spirits away.

A tradition that kids will like is that parents aren't supposed to scold their children during the Lunar New Year. Livaccari also points out that, just like in the West, "Your average 14 year-old in Beijing, Shanghai, or Seoul is probably more focused on this as a chance to get some more time to play video games or interact with friends online."

In Artis is vanochtend, na een draagtijd van ongeveer zes maanden, een Mandril geboren. Het baby-aapje en de moeder maken het goed.

De verzorgers hebben het geslacht van het dier nog niet kunnen bepalen, omdat het jong zich nog stevig aan zijn moeder vastklampt. Mama-mandril heeft haar kleintje wel al aan het publiek getoond. 'Ze is al een paar keer naar het buitenverblijf gelopen.'
In september en januari 2011 mocht de zoo ook al twee jonge mandrils verwelkomen. Inmiddels bestaat de groep uit negen dieren.
De mandril is na de mensapen de grootste apensoort ter wereld en staat bekend om de gekleurde kop en het dito achterwerk. De kwetsbare apen, waarvan de populatie in het wild ieder jaar afneemt, komen voor in de tropische regenwouden van Kameroen, Gabon en Congo-Brazzaville.

The Beatles Fan Club Christmas Flexi discs regularly appear in our auctions.

The flexible plastic records were issued at Christmas time to all the members of the Beatles fan club and contained a special recorded message by the band to the fans.

In 1963 apparently 25,000 were made and sent out to fans, then a further 10,000 got sent out without sleeves due to demand. After that obviously the fan club numbers exploded and many more copies of subsequent discs were sent out.

The rarest of the Christmas records dates from 1970, when fan club numbers were falling. This was a proper vinyl album which compiled all the previous Christmas flexi discs together on one record.

So far we have flexi discs from 1963 to 1967 in the auction. The 1963 disc is estimated to sell for around £80-£100 and the rest for around £50-£60 each.

Former Jam frontman Paul Weller has become the father of twin boys and named them after a trio of his musical heroes.
The rocker's wife, Hannah, gave birth to John Paul and Bowie on Saturday, according to a message on his website.
It said: "Both boys are healthy and doing well following the birth and Paul and Hannah are thrilled and over the moon.

"Paul would like to thank his fans for all their well wishes over the last few months."

ROTTERDAM - Op zondag 15 januari 2012 (15.00 uur) beleeft de voorstelling HELP van theatergroep Max. zijn reprisepremière in theater De Gouvernestraat, Rotterdam, voorafgegaan door try-outs op 13 en 14 januari.

HELP is muziektheater over het ontstaan van The Beatles voor de hele familie. Aansluitend op dit thema organiseren Max. en de SKVR op 14 januari (15:00 - 18:00 uur) de bandjescompetitie Rotterdam's got talent. Tot en met 10 juni 2012 speelt Max. HELP in Nederland, België, Duitsland en de VS. De voorstelling die in september 2009 in première ging, bereikte in 2009/2010 17.500 bezoekers en was genomineerd voor de ANWB Publieksprijs 2009 voor beste jeugdmusical. HELP wordt gespeeld door Lottie Hellingman, Marne Miesen, The Sadists (Orkater), Mees van Warmerdam en Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen.

Liverpool na de oorlog. Je moeder overlijdt jong. Je hebt geen cent te makken, alleen een vetkuif, een gitaar, een droom. En een nieuwe sound. HELP gaat over de beroemdste band ter wereld, over hoe vier jongens de hemel bestormen en volhouden. Een muzikaal verhaal over vriendschap en jaloezie en natuurlijk over een onstuitbaar brandende passie voor muziek. Alsof je live meemaakt hoe The Beatles zijn begonnen. Een echte Beatlemania...

Bandjesdag

Op 14 januari houdt Max. samen met de Rotterdamse Popschool (SKVR) de bandjesdag Rotterdam's got talent voor aanstormende bandjes (11-20 jaar) uit Rotterdam en omgeving. Na de optredens is er Fish 'n Chips en na afloop van de voorstelling zal een deskundige jury de winnaar bekend maken. De winnaar mag optreden in het decor van HELP.

Moniek Merkx (regie) over HELP: 'We wilden een voorstelling maken over de jonge jaren van The Beatles, de weg naar die beroemdheid toe. En dan heb je vervolgens die schatkamer aan muziek uit die tijd. Veel kinderen en jongeren van nu ervaren roem en muziek via auditieprogramma's. Maar muziek gaat helemaal niet over audities. Het gaat over zelf doen, zelf muziek maken en daar lol en discipline in ontwikkelen. In HELP laten we die noeste arbeid zien. Die Beatles muziek is nog steeds waanzinnig goed, die kan echt raken. Als je dat live hoort, dan heb je het gevoel dat je erbij bent. Bij dat unieke moment uit de popgeschiedenis dat The Beatles ontstonden.'

Naast optredens in Rotterdam, speelt Max in tientallen andere Nederlandse en Belgische steden, van 11 april tot 13 mei in Children's Theatre Seattle, Seattle (VS) en ook nog eens 32 keer speciaal voor circa 11.000 scholieren.

De legendarische band The Beatles herleeft op zondag 15 januari in Horst met een optreden van de Beatles-tributeband The Magical History Tour in Muziekcafé De Buun.The Magical History Tour plaatst het Beatles-repertoire in deze tijd. Meestal wat steviger aangezet, zoals ook Paul McCartney zijn nummers uit de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw tegenwoordig speelt. Met rockende gitaren en drums, maar met de oorspronkelijke meerstemmige zang, want die is van alle tijden. The Magical History Tour speelt de composities van Lennon-McCartney én George Harrison uit de vroege jaren zestig. Ook werk uit latere perioden van de Beatles staat op het repertoire. Tijdens het programma van bijna drie uur komen meer dan vijftig Beatles-nummers voorbij. Ze nodigen uit tot meezingen en –swingen. Af en toe valt ook een traantje weg te pinken. The Magical History Tour wordt gevormd door Jan van Riet, Tinus Boer, Bart van Oort, Han Verbakel en Jacques Boer.

Een gitaarversterker van voormalig Beatle George Harrison gaat worden geveild. ‘Ultimate Classic Rock’ claimt dat de uiterst zeldzame versterker door Harrison werd gebruikt tijdens opname-sessies voor de albums ‘Revolver’ en ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. Dat de versterker, een Vox UL730, van Harrison was werd pas recentelijk ontdekt doordat een reparateur de naam ‘George Harrison’ ontdekte die in het chassis gekrast was. Na verder onderzoek bleek inderdaad dat de versterker eigendom was van Harrison.

‘Very few amps used by the Beatles have come to auction before, and to find one that was used on two such significant albums is truly rare and exciting’ aldus Stephen Maycock, een consultant voor Bonhams.

George Harrison had flown to India on 7 January 1968 to record the soundtrack for the film Wonderwall. The sessions took place from 9-13 January in Bombay (Mumbai). Work was mostly complete by 12 January.

Keen to maximise the use of his studio time, Harrison recorded a number of additional ragas, which he thought might be suitable for future Beatles recordings. One of these, recorded on this day, became The Inner Light.

The instrumental track was taped in five takes, and was completed back in London on 6 and 8 February 1968. The Bombay musicians included Ashish Khan (sarod), ahapurush Misra (tabla and pakavaj), Sharad Jadev and Hanuman Jadev (shanhais), Shambu-Das, Indril Bhattacharya and Shankar Ghosh (sitar), Chandra Shakher (sur-bahar), Shiv Kumar Sharmar (santorr), SR Kenkare and Hari Prasad Chaurasia (flute), Vinayak Vohra (taar shehnai) and Rijram Desad (dholak, harmonium and tabla-tarang).

The Bombay sessions took place at EMI Recording Studios, based at the Universal Insurance Building, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta Rd, Fort, Bombay 400001.

The drummer is still in close contact with his ex-Beatles band mate, but while they still like to get together from time to time, they don't have any immediate plans to work together again in the future.

Ringo told BBC Radio 2 presenter Steve Wright: 'He surprised me when I was playing Radio City Music Hall, and he got up and he played 'Birthday', which I played with him because I wanted the opportunity to ply with him again, and he's on the last record, he's not on this one.

'We do hang out a bit but we're not in each other's pockets, and if the opportunity is real, I've played on a couple of his records, he's played on mine.'

Ringo - who is not known for his singing voice - jokingly added: ' But we never sit there and say, 'oh yeah we'll put it together', I'll do 'Yesterday' and 'Hey Jude', he'll do 'Octopus's Garden'.'

There had been rumours the pair could reunite to play at the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London this summer, but Ringo has ruled any possibility of him being involved out, because he is on tour in the US.

He added: 'There was talk about The Olympics last year, but I'm not here, I'm booked to tour America. I don't know if he's going to do it, but I'm off.'

Paul McCartney has claimed that The Beatles would have easily won ‘X-Factor’, had they had the chance as a new act. Though not if they were playing their early songs. I’m not really sure he’s understood how ‘X-Factor’ works.

Anyway, he told The Daily Record: “I think we’d have won it. Seriously. Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh would have been all over us like a wet washcloth. If you’re talking of The Beatles on ‘Love Me Do’ – there’s doubt. But if you’re talking of when we’d developed some of our better songs …we’d cream em”.
